Basic remote fob. Buttons for lock, unlock, trunk, and panic. No immobilizer chip - used alongside a separate ignition key. Being phased out on newer models. Replacement: $100-$150.
Transponder key fob (remote head key). Combines the remote buttons with a physical key blade containing a transponder chip. One device for both remote functions and engine starting. Most common type on 2005-2018 vehicles. Replacement: $150-$250.
Smart proximity fob. No physical key blade (or a hidden emergency blade). Walk-up unlock, push-button start. The fob communicates wirelessly with the car for all functions. Standard on most 2018+ vehicles. Replacement: $200-$350.
OEM fobs from the vehicle manufacturer carry the brand logo and match the original exactly. They cost more ($250-$500 at dealers) but provide guaranteed fit and finish.
Quality aftermarket fobs use the same transponder chips and communication protocols. They are functionally identical. Case quality is slightly lower on some brands, but the electronics work the same. Aftermarket fobs through a locksmith cost $150-$350 - often less than half the dealer's OEM price.
1. We identify your fob type from your vehicle's year/make/model. 2. We arrive at your PSL location with the correct fob in stock. 3. We program the new fob to your vehicle via OBD-II. 4. We test all fob functions: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, proximity, and engine start. 5. If replacing a lost fob, we erase the old one from the system.
